Dr Barry Newell is a physicist who has an interest in (a) the dynamics of complex systems and (b) the way that individuals understand causation in such systems. His current activities include leadership of the ANU-UTS Climate-Energy-Water Links (CEWL) project. Within this project he has a particular focus on water as a common pool resource, with its potential to feature in a tragedy of the commons. He is also investigating the possibility that an inadequate understanding of material and information delays, and their contribution to policy inertia, will significantly reduce the effectiveness of policy in the water and energy sectors.
